Looking For Sample Resumes For Offshore Oil Rig Jobs? Don’t Bother! Only The First Page Matters by Calvin Loh

OffShore Oil Rig Jobs

Hundreds of people apply for the same Offshore Oil Rig Jobs, and HR needs to get rid of most of these resumes fast. Since they may only 10, 20, or 30 candidates for interviews, you need them to notice your resume. This doesn’t mean following a perfect sample resume. To make the first cut, only the first page of your resume matters. As HR staff are overworked and underpaid, they may not even go beyond the first half page unless you give them a good reason…Why only the first half page? Because when the HR staff double-clicks a resume and opens it up in his word processor, only the top half of the first page shows up on screen. When processing applications for entry level oil rig employment, they often won’t bother scrolling down. After all, no one cares much about small fry. So what should you write in that critical 1st half page?

1. Show That You Have All The Relevant Paperwork

Offshore drilling jobs have a lot of red tape. While the actual government regulations vary between different countries, states and provinces, here is a list to help you start:

  • Firefighting certification
  • Offshore survival training certification
  • Helicopter underwater escape training certification (HUET)
  • Trade certification/license recognized by the state where you will be working, e.g. welder, electrician, nurse/medic, etc.
  • Passport
  • Visa
  • Vaccinations
  • Medical fitness certification
  • First aid certification

If you show the HR officer that you already have all the paperwork you need to immediately start work, he’ll be more inclined to select you for an interview. After all, if you get hired, he doesn’t have to arrange for all the paperwork, certifications and training required. Less unpaid overtime for him to do, and maybe he’ll finally get home in time for dinner with his wife one of these days.

2. Show That You Have Relevant (Working) Experience

Offshore drilling companies prefer to hire people with relevant working experience. If you have this experience, list the most relevant and recent experience on the first page of your resume. Don’t include all the detailed job history. Just give a summary but leave a note to say that there are more details in the following pages. Traditionally, this should go on your cover letter. However, some HR staff ignore cover letters. Not only that, but you’ll find that HR rarely passes the interviewer your cover letter. So make your own life easier and duplicate the summary on both your cover letter and first page of your resume.

No experience? Then describe some relevant training or background – things like helping your uncle on his trawler during your school vacations to show that you have experience working at sea. If possible, try to get relevant training from vocational or community colleges. In the US, some of these colleges are affiliated with the Labor Department’s JobCorps program. If you meet certain requirements, you might even get a government subsidy. British soldiers who are leaving active service also have a subsidized training program.

There is no such thing as a perfect resume for offshore oil rig jobs. What matters most is what you write on page 1 of your resume. Catch HR’s interest by clearly listing your most relevant working experience and certifications/paperwork.
