What to do with a BS in Computer Science and Geology?

I graduated with a BS in computer science two years ago, worked for a year, hated cubicles, returned for a degree in geology, and I graduate soon. I am doing some research doing computer modeling with a professor and really enjoying it, but when I surf around monster for job postings I really don’t see much for someone with my dual degrees. I can see a need in geology for computer scientists to construct computer models and software tools, but I don’t know where to send my resume. Any ideas?

I have not found sites like Monster.com to be terribly helpful. You might start with USAJOBS and keep going back to it to check postings.

Also, consider as key words the applications with which you are familiar, especially assorted GIS applications. You may be able to get a decent paying job working with ARC products, etc., until you find something you really want to do.

Career Builder is somewhat more helpful than Monster in the environmental consulting field, though they’re nothing special, either. Check with your school’s placement office/career counselors.

A number of branches of geology use computer modelling – the oil industry is one especially if you have some geophsyics. Other branches that spring to mind are GIS and remote sensing. I think the combination would go just about anywhere – geology nowadays is very computer oriented. With luck you’ll find a field where you can combine the computer work with field checking of results. I would certainly apporach the oil companies and the minerals companies, as both would be favourable to the combination of geology and computers. Other work could include Datamining, and mine modelling.
