I dont think you did anything wrong in applying for the other job, but you have to remember that it takes them a while to gain applications and sort out interviews its not unusual to have to wait some time before hearing back. You had your kick at the can and for some reason they did not think you were right for the job. Even if you get another interview, it will turn out the same way.
