Can you use a reference for job hunting multiple times?

If you asked them for a reference for one job, but used it on another application too. Would that be rude?

Yes. You should give them a heads up though so they know what you’ve applied for and you can also tell them what’s skills are important in this particular job. The better the understand the position, the better they can relate your skills and abilities to it if they get a call.

Not at all, these days referees are more common. You can apply for 100 jobs and only get interviewed for 30, out of those you might only be short listed for 5 and not everyone does reference checks. Telling them about every job you apply for is ridiculous. Just ask them if they mind you listing them as a referee and that you are actively looking for work. Keep in touch every couple of months so if they get a call they’re prepared.
