How many years of college would it take to become a History teacher for elementary school?

Hi, i’m looking into a career after highschool, and what i should go to college for. Well i have a strong interest towards history and past events. Any idea how long i would need to go to college for and what kind of degree i would need to teach history in a elementry or high school?

I think most students take 4-5 years to complete a bachelors degree. For the high school or secondary school level you would need to major in history. To teach at the elementary level you could major in history, education, or liberal studies – depending on what is offered at your college and recommended for your particular state.

Each state has its own credential requirements. Typically, you’re looking at another year of coursework, though some of it can be included in your upper division electives. After that there’s a semester or two of student teaching.

You can find out more by reading college Web sites and your state department of education web site. I’m in California so I’ll offer these sites as examples of what to look for:

If you need more information or have other questions consider using your local public or college library and websites as a resource. Most libraries are offering assistance through some type of chat service.

In the average is four years to obtain a bachelor degree. I suggest you look into the curriculum that will help you teach Advance Placement courses. It will open more professional doors that way. You will need to also fulfill all the pedagogical courses in addition to your history courses to obtain your certification as a teacher. Most states will also make you take their certification test in order to get / keep it.

You would need to go to college for 6 years to obtain a master’s degree in education and probably a bachelor’s degree in history. I’m sure if you ask teachers of yours or research the internet you will find an answer. Best of luck.

4 years unless you get behind.

History degrees to look into would be secondary education (high school degree) or elementary education (grade school).
