How can I become a Greek Mythology teacher?

I’ve always been interested in Greek Mythology and want to be a teacher in the subject but don’t know what schooling I need to be a mythology teacher. Does anybody know?

First you should decide what level you want to teach, high school or college. For high school you would need to go to college and get your bachelor’s degree and teacher certification. It would probably take about 5 years. For college you will need a Masters degree or a PhD. Its up to you. Good luck.

First of all, to even be a teacher, you need to have a college degree! Coupled with that, you need to have a teaching certificate in order to be allowed to teach in the public schools. After you have done that, then you can surely teach Greek Mythology.

I am a teacher of English, and I have a section on mythology every year with my Sophomores. It is one of the most fun units of the year. There are no colleges where you can get a degree in Mythology! I am sorry, it must be coupled with something else. As far as I know, there is not a school in the USA that has a teacher who just teaches Mythology! They must teach one of the core subjects as well, and then add the mythology as a part of their curriculium. I am really sorry to burst your bubble, but I have been teaching for many years, and it has always been this way.

I too love Mythology, and besides Greek, there are many other myths from around the world that are just as interesting and fun to read about.

    Good luck with your future.

The most common way is to obtain degrees in Classics. This would make your college and post-graduate focus on Latin and Greek language and of course the myths, culture and literature.

You really have a couple of choices.
    1. Major in Classics in college. You might prefer to study more Classical Civilization than Classical Philology (which is language, mostly Greek and Latin). However, having at least a good command of one of those languages and very good command of the other will be necessary to get into a good Masters/PhD program. You’ll probably want to get your PhD, because you’ll need to get a job in most college/university Classics Departments, and college is pretty much the only way you can teach mythology.

    2. You might also consider getting a degree in History, with a specialization in Classical History. Then I would suggest a double major in Classics/History and a graduate program in History.

    3. You might consider getting a degree in Religion, Comparative Religion, or even Philosophy. Again, then I would suggest a double major with Classics/one of the above and a graduate program in one of the above.
