What programs and tools do I need to know and use?

Microsoft Word allows you to insert an image into any given document. If you’re using Word 2007 for example, point and click the "Insert" tab and then click the "Picture" button. Most other word processing programs allow you to insert graphics (via the "insert" command/feature).

As an experienced resume writer myself, I would not recommend using graphics or photos in a resume. Graphics, in general, tend to distract from your content at best–depending on the size of the graphic. And at worst, depending on the graphic itself, the use of the wrong graphic can actually be a turn-off to prospective employers if it’s perceived as inappropriate or corny.

There are exceptions to this rule, of course. If you have your heart set on inserting a graphic into a resume; it’s a good idea to keep them small, simple and subtle. Keep in mind that what’s in the printed word is most important in a resume. If the content is weak, cute graphics won’t make up for it.

Good luck.

I earned a bachelors of arts degree several years ago in digital media. Due to circumstances I was never ever to utilize it to find a good paying job (i.e. no internship, experience). Five years later I have been stuck in a dead end job. Please keep in mind I am not set on trying to get a position in my field of study but would like to reap the benefits of earning a degree. I always hear of people getting good jobs which had nothing to do with their degree.

Attached is a copy of my current resume. I having difficulties in making a mundane dead end job look spectacular. Could someone please give me some strong suggestions on making it more desirable to potential employers without lying?

Experience
• Enhanced ability to discern workload priorities and manage multiple projects with changing needs while acting as the liaison between client and company headquarters.

Rocky Mountain High Wheels, Colorado Springs, CO
• Developed efficient means of active listening to provide excellent customer service and ensure customer satisfaction.
• Maintained working independently with minimal supervision or as a cooperative team member.
• Mechanically inclined; ability to work well with tools.

• Ensured the security of sensitive customer information while handling all internal and external calls.

Education

Computer Skills
• Windows, Macintosh, MS Word, Excel, IBM AS 400, Adobe Photoshop, Internet, E-mail, keyboarding, indexing, ten-key.

i just updated mine… here are a few suggestions.

Penney J C
* for "Ensured the security of sensitive customer information while handling all internal and external calls."
try removing "Ensured" and just say
"Secured sensitive customer account information, in daily exchanges with customer base."

* for "Assisted sales associates, via multiple phone lines, in helping customers’ access sensitive credit information while researching and resolving customer complaints."
try
"Demonstrated proficiency in inter-departmental collaboration, as needed, with seamless transition assisting the sales department in an environment of high volume incoming calls; providing help to customers, in accessing sensitive credit information, while researching and resolving customer complaints." wordy, but impressive.

you can always get detailed, too…
ex:
"duties included, but were not limited to: tech support liaison, customer service (acct. billing and/or product Q’s), accounts receivable (processing credit card payments, sending out monthly statements), collections (updating outstanding accts & prepping for collections agency)"

hope that helps.

I am writing to company name on right margin, and the date on the left margin. But when I get the first letters of all the companies to line-up on the left side, the dates are slightly askew on the left. Even if I mess around with adding in extra spaces, i can’t get it perfect. Is there a tool in word to fix this?

The same line CAN have both left- and right-aligned elements. There are several types of tab stops on Word’s horizontal ruler. The normal one is the left-tab, where the text is left-justified against the tab stop, but there are two others: centered-tab and right-tab.

To attach them to a paragraph’s ruler, do this (instructions are for Word for Windows):

1.Right-click in the paragraph and select Paragraph.
2.Click the Tabs button.
3.Click the type of Alignment you want for the tab stop.
4.In the Tab stop position text box, enter the position you want the tab stop to go into.
5.Click Set.
6.For another tab stop, repeat the above steps.
7.Click OK.

Now to get the lines the way you want, type your left-text normally, then press the Tab key, then your right-text.

Hope that helps.

It’s a no brainer that the best candidate to be a restaurant manager is to have a good food service supervisory background. To work in a dog kennel, one would think that some background for the care and support of animals would be a good fit. How about a carpenter with the proper expert use of tools of the trade should be on the resume?

Before you answer, I didn’t vote for Bush Jr. But I surely did not vote for Obama based on the same criteria. Although Bush ran a state as it’s elected leader, Obama ran what? WTF is in this mans resume that made him "qualified" to sit behind the desk of the most powerful position on the planet?
If any person voted for him because he’s black, that’s absolutely idiotic! If anyone voted for him because he has a great ability to verbally communicate, equally stupid! If he received a single vote as an "anti Bush" move, that it is the biggest waste of a vote!

So why??? What’s in this man’s resume that makes him qualified as the leader of economics? What does this man have that makes him the best qualified to run a multi trillion $ corporation or economy?
What in his background that would make him a CEO of the largest business on Earth. In the real world, Bill Gates or Rubbert Murdock would qualify regardless of party affiliation. The president’s primary job is protect the country, be the country’s economical embassader to foreighn powers and sign congressional legislation that prospers the "entire" country not simple single special interests. Any one can pander, but it has no place in the white house. A competant governor who runs the economy and multi billion $$ state budget would qualify. So why Obama?
CROWN ROYAL – What web site did you get that data from? Sponge Bob.com?
DAVID H. – Two of you now comment on his resume, yet you and CROWN ROYAL can’t even come up with the same data. Clear how his supporters see diferent things on the same topic. No wonder why he got elected.
mommanuk… Is he qualified? That’s all I asked. And yes, a CEO of a multi billion $$$ successful company could be president. It is the attribute and area that the president spends most of his./her time on their entire term.

I don’t think voters took his lack of managerial experience into consideration. It appears like the Jim Jones followers who thought of him as a messiah type who would solve all their problems and lead them to the promise land. They also fell for the smooth articulate talk, but all con artists have the same ability.

Its not like when they check your references your old boss will say no he didn’t do that if you did. You can put it under skills or as the highlights of the job. But that is why you have a resume in the first place. Because you can say you were Director of Accounts. But no hiring managerreally knows what that means until you describe it on your resume.
