Yes, I’m a supporter of it. The left-wingers believe it should stop because "it only benefits the corporations" and will destroy the environment, but how many major oil spills have there been in the past decade? Plus, the oil rigs promote jobs. If we stop offshore oil drilling, hundreds of thousands of workers lose their jobs and the unemployment rate will skyrocket. Last time I checked, BO’s "goal" was to decrease unemployment, yet he wants to close down the oil rigs? Hmmmm….
Searching for new alternative energy resources is much more expensive. I’m a supporter of a clean environment and play my part in protecting it, but this BP spill was a result of poor construction on the rig and the government overlooking the activity on it. If proper inspection is done on other offshore oil rigs, another incident like this can be prevented in the future.

I support it for a lot of the same reason’s you do. Most of the fisherman in the gulf oppose the ban it as well because they worked for themselves and for the companies on the off season, so now they get a double whammy.

We will still get oil, and these rigs would just be left dormant, only for those to be opened up in international waters or overseas. If we continue to have these rigs be shut down, than the President should open or give permits for shallow water drilling which is must safer and not as esthetically impact as one is lead to believe. It was the Sierra Club and environmentalist wackos who promoted deep sea drilling which created more risk to the environment than shallow water drilling or even drilling on land.

Obama is an incompetent leader and has no clue what it takes to be President of the United States, next time the liberals and those that voted out of racism should think twice and actually listen to the actual campaigns, (not the smears). If they voted for Obama because of who he is and they actually knew who he was and what his plan was, than this country is in even more serious trouble. I would then have to realize we already have become a non-christian, communist nation.

I want to work offshore on an oil rig, and I think I understand most of the implications. I don’t get seasick and as my parents are divorced and I spend the holidays with my dad, I’m OK with being away from home.
I’m really good at science, and I’m doing maths, biology, chemistry and physics at school. English and history as well but I didn’t think they were as relevant. I plan to go to university after school.
So would a medical degree allow me to get a job as an oil rig medic, with no experience? I wondered, cause they all seem to talk about paramedic qualifications. I’m fairly sure you get experience working in a hospital as part of the degree so would that be enough?
Thanks in advance

Paramedic certification/license and a medical degree are two very different things. while a doctor may outrank a paramedic in the medical world, most doctors are useless outside of a well lit building with tons of medical equipment around them. Paramedics have specialized training for out of hospital emergencies and an experienced medic will be very resourceful and knowledgeable, while a med school graduate will be booksmart, have no real experience and by most of the medical community considered more of a liability than a help. by the time you become a physician with enough experience to work on an oil rig, it won’t be worth financially.
the only exception to this would possibly be recent med school graduate who is also a paramedic

My buddy just got a job down there 400 miles off the coast of Louisiana. He is an engineer and he is going to be working out this thing now for a job. It sounds like a decent living I mean then started him off with a great salary. His hours are kind o0f weird he gets 2 weeks on and 2 weeks off and he has to take a helicopter to work lol.

He said he can get me in there possible as a oil rig worker or as they call it a roust boat or something of the nature. I was wondering before I even consider it how dangerous this job really is? Like, do a lot of people die in this field? what happens if there is a hurricane? Do those things sink a lot? etc….These all are things that got me kind of iffy about the whole thing. Any and all information would be great help. Thanks everyone…

They work roust-abouts to death. As an engineer, your buddy is safe. Roust-abouts get hurt all the time. Don’t worry about hurricanes.

My husband and I have been married for five years, four months. We have a really great relationship and friendship, we are truly best friends, we have been together for a total of ten years.

Money has recently been tight, but we always make it through with a "little" bit extra. but he says it’s not good enough for his family.

We have also been doing things to better our lives, I returned to school to get my degree so that I can make more money in the future, but instead of my husband going back to school to get his degree, he applied for an offshore oil-rig job, the job pays 1,000 per week and comes with the chance to grow faster and advance, but he will be gone for three to four weeks at a time and when he comes home he will be here for 7-10 days before he goes back.

I want to be a supportive wife but I hate the fact that this is what he chose, we have spent one night apart since we got married,so that’s going to feel pretty strange. We have gotten into several arguments over it and it is becoming a strain on our marriage.

And I also have my mother in my ear saying that offshore work is for a single person, not someone with a family (she’s getting on my nerve) and not to mention we live in her basement, don’t get me wrong, we have our own entrance, it’s fully furnished, very modern, 2bdrm, 1bath but we share a kitchen.

Yesterday he called while I was out running errands and told me to go to this condo to fill out an application, so I did, then I get a call back from this lady stating that we were approved for the 2bdrm,2bath condo and I’m like O.K…..things are moving way too fast for me…..
He is a great provider and always has been, and let me also state that he’s 25 years old, I’m 26.

Please give me some advice to help me get through this feeling of sadness and confusion. This situation maybe ideal for two people that wasn’t deeply in love with one another, but I rather have him than to have all the riches in the world.

Please only married people or people that have been in seriously committed relationships for more than two years give me advice. Thanks

Do be prepared to be self sufficient for a while.
You say you’re a supportive wife but you are not being supportive about his decision. Sometimes you have to give in. You can do this. In the long run, the security that he’ll be able to provide will create peace and happiness in your future. It’s worth the sacrifice.
Also know that his sacrifice is greater than yours by choosing to do this. Offshore work is VERY hard and he will be lonlier than you.
The bright side is that this will make him value his family and home life more than ever when he’s home and when he’s done and it’s time to settle.
Get the condo.
Make the changes and the sacrifice. As long as you stay strong, faithful and optimistic and supportive through it all, you’ll be so glad you did in the end.

Hi, I am hoping that someone can help me with this (I’m expecting judgmental comments which will be duly ignored)! I’m looking to work offshore on an oil rig doing pretty much whatever I would be qualified for, but I am concerned that my background would prevent me from doing so. Long story short: 2 years ago I was busted for possession of a controlled substance (yes, I’m a dumbass) and was on felony probation (deferred adjudication) for two years. I completed my probation in January 2008 and have "kept my nose clean" since. I’ve made major steps in turning my life around and I’m not wanting this to hold me back. Does anyone know if this would hinder me in getting an offshore job? Any positive advice, tips, leads would be helpful. Thanks!

NEVER EVER believe that you can’t achieve whatever you set your mind to. I met an employee at a major company that served 12 years for manslaughter and he was one of their Favorite high Paid Employees.

Just be up front with the Job you apply for. Let them know how you are a changed person and only strive for success and leadership. They WILL hire you. Keep your head up and your character clean.

i will move anywhere. Do i have to be qualified to work on an oil rig? Is it usually easy to get hired on? Do people acually live on an offshore rig? Any help is appreciated thanks.

well are you wanting to work on a rig or do you want to do time on and off boats for oil? They are two different things, and it is much more worth it to spend time on and off boats on different jobs within the company. I work for an offshore oil surveying company. You should look into it…. they get paid wonderfully, and get free time at home. They also get paid when not working on a job and just sitting at home. www.utecsurvey.com… check out the site, and check out some other things like it. Expand your horizons.
