I need to know what to wear (17 years old, chubby, 5’4") and what kind of makeup would be most presentable (hazel eyes, long black wavy hair, olive/yellow pale skin, wears glasses) for going job hunting. It’s very important to me, it’s as important as if I was going to an interview. I want to look presentable and classy, but neat as well. What should I wear and what makeup?

Thanks!

dress neatly, clean, and COMFORTABLY (especially comfortable shoes)………….
khakis and a polo or a button down and slacks would be fine,
when applying for a job, or going for an interview you should always dress one step up from the work attire, it is possible to over dress (that is not as common an error) BUT regardless of the type of job
no, No, NO jeans, t-shirts, tennis shoes, shorts, or sweats..

make up should be lite, not overpowering, NO exotic colors. hair should be neat, and pulled up or back so it is off your face.

you are correct you need to present yourself as if you are going for an interview, which in reality you are ; "you don’t get a second chance to make a good first impression"…….

be prepared………….
have copies of a resume, if you have one (most employers do NOT expect one from an applicant that has no experience) a resume will not help you for most of the jobs you will be applying for but if you have one it WON"T hurt,
have an accurate list of references with current contact information (getting your first job references are CRITICAL),
pad and pen (employers look down on applicants who ask for an application and then must ask for a pen to fill it out),
go alone and/or if someone must drive you they must NOT go in with you’
make sure you have enough time set aside that if an interview is possible you can stay for it.

RELAX you will do fine, the fact visit is very late to be Job Hunting, most temporary and summer jobs have been filled for a couple of months SO if you don’t have much luck it is NOT you it is just the economy and the poor timing……….

I know the unemployment office says 20 hrs a week is what one should spend Job Hunting. And after you job hunt, what do you do with the rest of your day if you’re not interviewing or didn’t find anything? Can you sleep at night not knowing where your next dollar is coming from? I ask because I’m going thru all of this right now.

When I was unemployed, I spent about 40-50 hours looking for work, about the same amount of time I previously worked. Only the quality of work was different.

I looked online and in print at prospective jobs, asked friends and people I worked with in the past, spent time researching companies I wanted to work for, updated my LinkedIn, Facebook, and other social networking profiles, gain new skills (computer, etc.), and I rewarded myself for accomplishing certain goals such as going on X interviews or making Y phone calls.

And when I call what exactly should I say, who should I call, and when should I call back?

Any tips for interviewing would be highly appreciated(I get so nervous I stutter and say stupid things haha).

Thanks for any help and please don’t be rude.

ok so a few pointers….apply EVERYWHERE whether you like the place or not..its still money in your pocket.
dress to what you think should be worn…like if you apply at mcdonalds dont wear a suit and tie..that would fit maybe a big financial place.
be polite and shake hands with anyone who meets you..manager employees anyone. ya never know they could be like wow hes polite so give him a chance
ask for an app and even if there not hiring what if someone quits and your next in line.
NEVER put anything that would bring you down on an app..if its an old job that fired you say there closed or it was a seasonal job.
after putting the app in there hands give it 2 or 3 days and even if they say they will call…they rarely ever do..so call back and say hey im——i just wanted to check on my application.
show them you want and need a job.
during an interview keep cool dont word things that you know you might mess up…and simply tell the person interviewing that you get a little nervous they should be 100% ok with it.
GOOD LUCK!!!

was diagnosed with a learning disability when I was a young kid and now that i’m an adult it seems to be hindering me in alot of areas. I can’t seem to get the job which leads to feeling good about yourself which leads to the girlfriend which leads to the sex which leads to not being so depressed anymore. I’ve been going to career assessment places, job boards, job counselors, unemployment offices, finding any part time thing I can. Yet I still live at home and i’m 27. If I keep going like this, my head will explode. Anyone have any Job Hunting tips?

Hey, your doing all the right things and you seem to be on
track. All you need is patience and persaverance. Don’t
worry your day will come you can’t give up!
Keep on trying, keep on being determined!
It’s tough for everyone to find work. Alot of people
have the same problem, but the key is not to
give up. The part of feeling good about yourself
you should not need employment for that.
I know it does help to feel independant
and stuff but don’t let it define you as your person.
You seem to have a pretty good plan in action
I think it’ just requires a little time.
Have faith and DON’T GIVE UP!
GOOD LUCK

hello everyone! I am a 16 year-old girl who is looking for her first job. I want to know if there are any good tips in looking for a job or maybe Interview Tips. I am very good with people and solving problems. I have applied for a few jobs ( a local camp ground, 2 grocery stores, a restaurant, and even McDonalds) but no luck! i know it is a bad economy, but there have to be some ways to get a job!

Along with showing your professional capabilities (dress nicely, be clean)
And your social ones (shake hands, smile, be polite, don’t be nervous)

Show that you’re prepared (know your information, have references etc. on hand)
And responsible (go Job Hunting by yourself, bring your own pen just in case)

Keep in mind answers to questions that the manager may ask you when handing in your application.
What 5 words would you use to describe yourself?
Why did you pick this business?
How would you be an asset to my team?

Keep in mind that the economy IS pretty horrible right now.
I applied to 30+ businesses and went through 4 interviews before getting my first job a year ago.

Don’t be close minded to seasonal work, right now acquiring a summer job would be enough to give you the upper-hand of experience and make that second, more permanent job much easier to obtain.

Good luck (:

I am considering making a move. Do any former Americans have any advice? Particularly I am interested in how difficult the financial adjustment is, and the time it potentially takes to find a job… thinking London, Brighton… one of the larger cities. I am a college student and have work experience mostly in service and retail, etc. I would just like some stories of Americans who have made such spontaneous moves – if for nothing else, the sake of curiosity. Thanks.

Job Hunting in the UK is just as tough as the US right now. Your first problem is going to be getting a work permit in the first place – you pretty much either have to have a Masters or PhD for the Tier 1 visa or have to be transferred by your US employer on a Tier 2 Intercompany Transfer visa. Or if you are a full time student on a student visa, you can work up to 20 hours a week during school terms. There is almost no other way for a company to sponsor you unless you are highly skilled and highly educated and have skills that are in demand (medical specialities, engineering, science). So before you worry about looking for a job, you are going to have to first see if you qualify for a visa to begin with

The better the understand the position, the better they can relate your skills and abilities to it if they get a call.

No its not, Alot of employers are hiring for the Spring season. You will get some rejection, but keep trying, applying, following-up. etc.

Try Home depot, fast food(always hiring), restaurants, retail, etc. They are all hiring right now.

employers are free to give out any information regarding an ex employee as long as it is truthful, some companies may only answer certain questions some may not give out any information but that is their policy not law, references good or bad are not illegal as long as they are true
