There are different kinds of English majors. What you want to do would be English Education. It is also sometimes listed as English/Secondary Certification. Depending on what state you are in, secondary certification will allow you to teach grades 7-12, 8-12, or sometimes something different. The bachelor’s degree will typically take 4 years to obtain, but most schools require you to get your master’s within 5 years in order to keep your teaching job.

I have a BFA in Musical Theatre… I know, why? But after several years of struggling and, for lack of a better phrase, finding myself, I have realized that I should take everyone’s advice and look into teaching.

I am a CT resident, but do not need to stay here. So, what are the steps?

Does a Praxis test come before or after grad school?
Is certification part of grad school?

If you are a teacher – especially in CT – your help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

This explains everything you need to know about becoming a teacher CT: http://www.sde.ct.gov/sde/cwp/view.asp?a=2613&q=321230&sdePNavCtr=|#45439

Since you already have your degree, you’ll want to look into alternative certification programs (ones for people who already have at least an undergrad degree). They’ll save you time. If you enroll in a state-approved certification program, you’ll get certified when you finish the program. The PRAXIS is for after you’ve done your coursework.

It’s much easier to get certified in the same state you’ll teach in, so if you think you might like to work somewhere else, look for requirements on that state’s dept of ed website.

My high school graduating class seems to have a very large number of students becoming teachers, I am wondering of the average 100 people how many are teachers?
I tried to find it on the Bureau of Labor Statistics, but couldn’t get a clear answer.

Thanks

easy to calculate:

people under 20: 27.6 %
people over 65: 12.6%
popualtion of US: 310 million

that leaves 59.8% eligible to be employed (185.38 million)

There are 4.2 million teachers in the US

4.2/185.83 = which is 2.23 percent of the working age population.

The reason you see so many of your classmates saying they want to be teachers is that teaching is the one profession that *everyone* has an experience with. They wont all stick with it.

I want to become this teachers favourite student but I don’t have him for a class. I had him once at the start of the year but he moved class. I speak to him around school (just a basic "hello, how are you?" conversation) but I want to become his favourite student. Are there any conversation starters that you could recommend or things I should say to him? Please and thank you.
No I am not in love with this teacher, yuck. I just think he teaches cool and I just want to stay on his good side. I’ve become a favourite student with another teacher but that’s because I have a few classes with her. So don’t think I’m in love, he’s too old.

haha nice question:

1. Don’t talk in class unless instructed or allowed to talk. Normally, talking before/after the bell is okay but don’t be too loud. Teachers are known to appreciate people who are quiet and hard working. Be attentive, not talkative, while you’re in class.

2. Always listen to the teacher and pay attention. This will show that you are interested in the subject. Teachers are impressed by such students, especially when there are also students present who show a lack of interest in any studies.

3. Offer to help others if you know the subject. At home, study a bit extra by going online and copying problems. This will make the subject easier for you, and people will suspect that you studied at home.

4. Show a lot of work on your homework. This is perhaps the most important step. In math, teachers like students who show work. Even if you show more than you are required to, do what it takes. No teacher will punish a student for showing a lot of work. In fact, their homework might be used as a class example in a class where most kids fail to show work.

5. If you have questions, try to ask your teacher and classmates for assistance. Not only will it help you learn more, but will show, again, that you are truly into it.

6. Make your parents go to parent teacher conferences. Advise them to ask how you can do better at the subject.

7. Study for tests in free time in math if you have any instead of just pulling out a book and reading.

God bless you.

regards,
Anish

I want to become a pagan… BUT!!! I need to tell my parent and my mom is a catholic and my dad believes in evolution because he is a science teacher. My mom is not a strong catholic and I don’t know how to tell then.

Why do you need to tell your parents? I don’t ask because I think you shouldn’t tell them, but because it is a good question to ask yourself. Is it because you don’t want to go to mass anymore with your mom or something like that? They’re obviously open to other beliefs to some degree since they have different beliefs themselves and are married.

There is a book called, "When Someone You Love Is Wiccan," which might be a good book for them to read, if you’d like to share something like that. If I were you, I’d read it first to really make sure it represents you and what you believe. "Pagans" can believe a lot of different things, and if you’re not Wiccan, that book won’t really help you.

If I were wanting to share my beliefs with my parents, I would sit down in a number of sessions and write down what I believe, why I want to call myself a pagan, and what that means to me. I would think of the questions my parents might ask me when I talked about it, and try to answer those questions for myself first. Questions like, "so what do you believe?" and "do you still believe in God?" "what about Jesus?" "what about evolution?" or anything else that might come up are good things to think about beforehand.

Oh, and believing in evolution really doesn’t mean he doesn’t have a faith of some sort. There are many Christians who believe in evolution without compromising their faith in God, the Bible, etc. A person can believe that God created everything in 6 days, but also allowed for evolution.

I became a pagan when I was 16 and didn’t tell my parents until I was 18. It worked out fairly well because I had a better idea of what I believed by the time I really talked about it with them. If you sit down and figure out what you would say to questions about your beliefs, you could probably tell them earlier and not feel too awkward about it. Confidence goes a long way.

Edited to add:
I’ve been a pagan for 12 years and I’m not self-absorbed or miserable. I am quite happy with my life.

Also, for those who don’t even know what Pagans are about, Christians also used to make animal sacrifices and even human ones. Remember the big Bible story about a man who took his son to be a sacrifice to God, only to have an angel stop him at the last minute and make available a ram instead… ring any bells? Or how about the big human sacrifice that resulted in everyone’s salvation, eh? Point is, Christians made human sacrifices too, so saying some other pre-Christian group of people were "bad" because they made human sacrifices is really saying that Christians were bad too.

Modern neopagans don’t make animals sacrifices, though they may leave offerings for the gods/spirits/etc. The word "pagan" refers to the people in lands conquered by Christians who still believed in the old gods and spirits of that land. It doesn’t mean any particular belief systems or practices. It just meant someone who continued to follow their old ways and belief systems after being conquered by Christians. Modern "pagans" tend to be people who draw their beliefs from pre-Christiann European folk tradition and practices, as well as their own interactions with the gods/God/spirits, and the wealth of practices and information brought together by their neopagan predecessors. They tend to honor the natural cycles of the land and nature, including their own bodies. They’re certainly not going out and making animal or human sacrifices.

You would major in education with History as your specialization. Yes, tell your advisor so that he/she can make sure you take the right classes.

If you can possibly help thank you and can you give the websites of where you found your information thanks.

So Amerikans could learn EBONICS maybe? Actually, blacks were NOT encouraged to become teachers until WELL after 1957 and Brown v. Board of Education, so I don’t know where you get the idea they were. You are welcome to your own beliefs but you are not welcome to your own facts.

Back then the REPUBLICANS were still upset that blacks had GOTEN THE RIGHT TO VOTE because the REPUBLICANS have always tried to keep all the minority races underfoot and BLACK minority races in particular.

AND the REPUBLICANS haven’t changed much.. once a RACIST always a RACIST and BIGOT ad they still hate MINORITIES and use FEAR to keep their old, white core subjects in line and voting for all the punitive and restrictive ideas they can come up with to keep people they view as "lesser" down and under their heel.

Better read this quickly because all the racists and bigots on here will report it for abuse since the truth hurts.
